An exploration of the freshman-year-at-art-school phenomenon, in which everyone goes through a second wave of coming-of-age to become artists. This strange growth period is on par with Nightmare Before Christmas paraphernalia, first and second cigarettes, and tequila hangovers; it involves drawing a lot of nudity and female body parts as shock value to establish one’s presence in this edgy new institution that doesn’t have rules. Eventually, we all learn from it and come out of it more well-rounded.

The subject of my senior thesis was the ethos of human flight. The purpose of this was to ask questions about how flying, a universal and very human urge to see things from new perspectives, changed over time since its beginning, when people could only dream of it. As the dream got progressively closer to our contemporary airport reality, people grappled with kites, God, and birds to fly. This has been a tale intertwining hubris, freedom, science and religion. My research turned this project into a five-part narrative as I developed a better understanding about this slow journey we have all collectively been a part of.
